Cutting Reality

From exhibition to cut-up reality

Inspired by the exhibition of Nicolas van Parys, we start from our own image archive, built in the city with the smartphone. We cut, reorganize, and transform these fragments analogously into new collages in which reality takes shape again.

During this three-day workshop:

Day 1 – Looking & Collecting

We start with a tour of the exhibition of Nicolas van Parys and dive deeper into his unique way of working. Then we head out into the city together. With just your smartphone, you collect your own visual material: details, textures, shapes, architecture, chance encounters, and hidden stories. These photos will be developed and form the basis for the following sessions.

Day 2 – Cutting & Transforming

We will work with our own photographic material. By cutting, shifting, combining, and rearranging, surprising collages emerge in which new images and meanings become visible.

Day 3 – Refining & Presenting

We will further refine our collages, make a personal selection, and present the results to each other. We will take time to discuss the process and the different approaches together.

Practical information

• Target audience: For adults (16+)

• Level: All levels welcome

• Time: 3 days, from 1:30 PM to 5:00 PM

• Price: €220 (Participation fee)

• Included: Materials, guidance from Sofie and Nicolas, development of the photos, and a drink.

• What to bring: Your smartphone and charger. A personal laptop is handy for selecting/uploading images.
