Within allesgut, the limited edition ‘24’ makes a concrete connection between photography, video, time, the artist’s book and the exhibition space.
Its starting point is the cinematic second: 24 frames per second. What video presents as movement and duration is taken apart in this edition and considered again as photography. One second becomes 24 separate images.
The edition of 12 per format alludes to the prehistory of cinema in the nineteenth century, when the very first silent films grew out of the discovery of photography. Those early films ran at around 12 frames per second. Since the arrival of sound film in the twentieth century, 24 frames per second has been the common standard.
Wandels now makes the reverse movement: he translates that underlying principle back into a still, spatial arrangement.
Each image becomes an autonomous photographic work within an edition of 24 copies, 12 in A4 and 12 in A3. The number 24 thus becomes both a measure of time and a measure of reproduction: 24 images make one second, 24 copies make one edition.
The two formats set a second movement in motion. A4 stays close to the scale of the artist’s book and the page; A3 carries the image out of the book into the exhibition space and turns it into a photographic object. The edition becomes a passage between book and space, between still and moving image, between the fleetingness of time and the materiality of the photographic object. What lasts only a second in video is held here materially, divided over images that can be looked at, collected and kept one by one. allesgut does not turn that one second into a reproduction of movement, but into a materialisation of time:
one second, materially saved as 24 images.
Each copy is signed and numbered by Björn Wandels. The images are printed on matte photo paper, mounted on dibond and fitted with a hanging system; they come unframed. A4 costs € 120, A3 € 180, VAT included. In the web shop you first choose the image (1 to 24), then the format; as soon as an image is sold out in a format, you see it right away.
Collection at DeNode Foundation / nodenaysteen in Ghent is free, during opening hours. Shipping is one parcel per order, however many prints you buy. Because the works are mounted on dibond, they travel flat in sturdy packaging. A4 only: € 12 within Belgium, € 25 abroad. If there is at least one A3, everything goes together in one A3 package: € 15 within Belgium, € 30 abroad.
