Created in the context of allesgut, Björn Wandels’ solo exhibition at nodenaysteen, the SCREEN edition occupies a particular position within the project and within the artist’s wider practice.
Wandels selected this image for allesgut because he sees it as a bridge between two dimensions of his work: photography and moving image. The face, obscured by a white rectangular surface, becomes almost a screen — an empty space onto which another image might appear.
For the artist, the work expresses a desire to capture on film what exists in the mind, as though the head or face itself could become a blank screen for future cinematic projections. The photographic image is therefore not only something to be looked at: it becomes a potential space for another image, still absent or yet to come.
This relationship between the visible and the imagined resonates with a broader question running through allesgut: how images can be revisited, displaced and transformed through new contexts and associations.
The edition also reflects the importance of material process and local craftsmanship. Produced in Ghent in collaboration with Atelier Alexander Saenen and Fotoshop Gent, the work brings together photographic printing, mounting and framing expertise. The collaboration anchors the production of SCREEN within Ghent’s photographic and artistic ecosystem, bringing together the artist’s conceptual approach and the knowledge and craftsmanship of two established local producers.
Printed as an archival pigment print on matt baryta paper, the photograph is mounted on aluminium and presented in a wooden frame. Each material decision contributes to the physical presence of the image and to the transition from photographic image to autonomous object.
