Stien Bekaert slows down the rapid consumption of images by pausing and manipulating found-footage material. This deconstruction removes the cultivation of needs and desires. The work Splits Parted, sunset (2024) is based on iPhone snapshots of sunsets, reduced to patterns of colors and lines on paper. In Splits Parted, photographic images blur between alienation and recognition.
As painted and drawn lines, the transfer technique creates traces, errors, and a play with material and texture, generating new images that add personal and social commentary as accents to existing images.
