“In my drawing, we see a wasps’ nest in which the wasps are ‘busy at work.’ Throughout my work, themes such as life and death, good and evil, birth, time, decay, mysticism, identity, nature, and the search keep reappearing. In this drawing, the wasps symbolize a threatening presence; evil. They play the role of ‘bad guys’ in a western film, dressed in black.

By contrast, bees are often seen as the ‘good guys,’ the sheriffs in white. This drawing thus contains a symbolic interaction between the danger of the wasps and the beauty and materiality of the image itself.”

Wannes Vanwijnsberghe took part in the group exhibition (expo)nentieel at DeNode (2024–2025, curator Hilde Van Canneyt).
